Writing updates

So I've been pretty quiet here for a while. I'm still lurking, though! I do have a new, primarily writing-focused blog up, though, so feel free to come on by!

In other exciting news, I have two poems up in the new issue of The Rat's Ass Review (my apologies to anyone who's hearing this for the third time). Check it out!

Sing, sing, sing

Meme from c0untmystars --

Comment to this post and I will give you a letter. Upload and share five songs beginning with that letter.

I was given "S." I actually have no idea how to upload the songs, so I'll just list them...

1. Say Hey (I Love You) -- Michael Franti & Spearhead: My current favorite dance-around feel-good song.

2. Short Skirt/Long Jacket -- Cake: If I had to pick a personal theme song, I'd want this to be it.

3. Sure on this Shining Night -- written by Samuel Barber: I sang this years ago when I was taking voice lessons and doing a lot of choral singing. This is by far one of my favorite vocal pieces ever.

4. Shining Star -- Earth Wind & Fire: And this one I sang just today while playing Rock Band with the hubby. (Bonus: also sang Sin Wagon by the Dixie Chicks.)

5. Sunday Morning Yellow Sky -- October Project: First they were October Project. Then they were November Project, and now they're defunct (though I think the individual members are still making albums). I always thought they had a very cool, unique sound.

...you'll love "Hamster in a Wok"! (Don't worry, it's not being cooked.)

Further proof that the Benny Hill theme song makes everything better.

Not quite ordinary

Wow, I think I finally figured out what genre my novel-in-progress is!

December 2nd, 2008

So I knew Shakespeare invented a lot of words, but I hadn't realized how many (and which ones) had caught on and are still in (very common!) use today. Lonely? Alligator? Negotiate? All words Shakespeare invented.

Mid-month check-in

So, I just hit 15,000 words on my NaNo tonight. A bit behind schedule, but I still have hope that this will be the year I crack 50,000. (Even if not, it's still a whole bunch of writing I've managed to get myself to do.) I did about 10 of the song prompts, and then they had their intended consequence of getting me re-inspired for my novel-in-progress a bit earlier than anticipated. So that's what I'm working on now. Just counting it all toward my word goal. I know technically it's cheating for NaNo purposes, but I'm too psyched my novel is moving along again to care!

I'm finding that one of my characters swears. A lot. I'm not offended by swearing, but I don't generally put a ton of it into my writing. But man, this guy is just letting those f-bombs rip. He's kind of a jerk in general, I think. And really fun to write. :)

I hear stories all the time about Jesus showing up on a tortilla or the Virgin Mary appearing on a dirty hospital window. Well, now it's Buddha's turn. Which, really, only seems fair.

Why am I so fascinated by things like this? It's not the visions themselves that intrigue me so much as the act of people finding meaning in the ordinary. I kind of like the idea of the entire world as a giant Rorschach test.

(Then again, who knows? Once, not long after I fell in love with my husband, I was eating an orange and found two seeds stuck together in the shape of a heart. Maybe the world is trying to speak to us.)

I just got my copy of the new issue of Alehouse, which contains my poem "Regressions" (available at http://alehousepress.com/). Yay!

I also got the electric bill, but it was lower than I expected. Yay!
